A Mindful Approach to Home Design

Posted by Jennifer Adams on

“Being in the moment—being present and mindful—enhances your life and your well-being. It’s easier to be in the moment, and enjoy it to your core, if you’re in an environment that supports who you are and the way you like to live.”

—Jennifer Adams

The American Psychological Association featured new research about the benefits of practicing mindfulness daily, which they defined as “a moment-to-moment awareness of one’s experience.” The benefits listed include: stress reduction, better memory, increased focus, cognitive flexibility, and resilience. The key to reaping these life-enhancing benefits is daily practice, a practice that begins in your home.

Creating a home environment that fosters mindfulness starts with integrating it into your home design process. Mindfulness improves your ability to pay attention to your surroundings, which helps you to better identify what’s working and what’s not. To help you get started, here are a few tips from Jennifer’s new book Love Coming Home:

    •   Tap into all 5 senses. Beyond the visual experience of design, remember that you are equipped with four other powerful senses—touch, sound, taste, and smell—that are just as important in creating a beautiful and mindful home. (Check out our post on how to Transform Your Home Using all 5 Senses.)

    •  Assess your home environment. Pay attention to your whole day, from the time you awake to the moment you go back to bed. Mindfully follow your movements and activities, room by room, and write down what you experience through all your senses. Note what’s working or not.

    •  The gift of observation. Practice using mindfulness to help you observe your environment. By taking time to quiet your mind and be present, you build your innate creativity and ingenuity. One way to boost your creativity is to take time outside and be present to the wonders of nature. By observing our natural world, new design ideas can spark your imagination.
