Simple, Creative, & Effective Ways to Spruce Up Your Home Environment

Simple, Creative, & Effective Ways to Spruce Up Your Home Environment

Many of us are spending more time at home these days out of necessity, but that really doesn’t have to be a bad thing. There is comfort to be found in the familiarity and stability of being at home!

But do you ever get tired of staring at the same four walls? Is looking at the same old rooms in the same old house starting to get old? If so, then it’s time to do something about it! Basically, you have three options:

Option 1
Tired of looking at all the same old stuff? Then just quit looking! Try navigating around your house with your eyes completely shut for the rest of your life. It could be fun! It could also end up being dangerous, though. Let’s proceed to Option 2.

Option 2

Move. It’s that simple. Just find someplace else to live – problem solved! Of course, that will also entail possibly needing to find a new job, relocating to someplace unfamiliar, getting your current home ready for sale, putting it on the market, and a hundred other details. Don’t have the budget, patience, or even a desire to move? Then let’s look at Option 3.

Option 3
Spruce it up
! You may not be able to change your location, but you CAN change the look and feel of your space. Remember, people don’t actually fear change; they only fear the change that they don’t understand, or can’t control. Well, you’re in control of your space, so you can be the change you wish to see!

Tips for Adding Some Flair, Zest, Personality, AND Comfort to Your Home

Assuming you’re not ready to pick up and move to a new place, there are many simple and creative things you can do to spruce up your interior space and change up your home décor & environment for the better. Here are just a few suggestions:

Paint

This is probably one of the most common suggestions you’ll hear, so I wanted to go ahead and put this one on the list. There’s a reason why you’ll hear this one a lot; putting on a fresh coat of interior paint is one of the quickest, most effective ways to change the overall look of your space. Choose a different wall color for each room – heck, you can even choose a different color for designated walls in the same room if you like. If you’re artistically inspired, you can even paint your own custom mural on a wall of your choice. Vive les peintures murales!

Hang a painting

Not everyone has the skills to paint their own mural, much less paint anything that could be considered as art. That’s OK! If you can’t paint yourself, you can always hang up what someone else has painted. Maybe you don’t have the budget for an original Monet or Van Gogh, but you can often find an interesting painting or two at a consignment boutique or antique shop.

Don’t hang a painting

The art you choose doesn’t have to be a painting. There are several creative (and affordable) things you can frame to hang up – like a poster print, a completed jigsaw puzzle, or a collage you make yourself. Create a gallery wall with pictures of various family members, both past and present. Small keepsakes of any kind mounted in shadow boxes are always some cool features to display, as well.

Try some other creative wall art

There are lots of other interesting things you can put on a wall, too. How about something that’s both unique and stylish, like a handmade piece from a local African craftswoman? Take a look at our Conscious Commerce collection. It includes a beautiful selection of woven bowls, baskets, trays, and more. These one-of-a-kind pieces can be used as functional table settings, but they also make for some fantastic wall décor.

Decorate with some area rugs

Your walls aren’t the only things you can change. You can also spruce up your floor space with the simple insertion of some tasteful area rugs. Area rugs are a great way to help pull together your intended design theme for any room, and the right area rug can also add an extra touch of soft comfort you can really sink your toes into.

Rearrange your furniture

Sometimes you just need a different perspective. You can often change the look and feel of a room by doing nothing more than rearranging the furniture. An added bonus? It doesn’t have to cost you a dime! And here’s another tip: don’t just push your furniture against the walls. Try arranging your furniture in smaller groupings that invite conversation. For example, you can have a sofa and two chairs facing each other, with a coffee table in the middle. Plus, if you’ll float your furniture away from the walls a bit, it can actually make the room feel larger.

Hang a mirror

If you have limited space to work with, another trick for making your home feel both brighter and larger is to hang at least one mirror in every room. Pro tip: put mirrors on walls perpendicular to windows, rather than directly across from them. Hanging mirrors on walls that are opposite to windows can actually bounce light right back out the window, rather than helping to spread that light around your room.

Spread some decorative pillows & throw blankets around

Decorative pillows add a distinctive touch to any sitting furniture, and throws can be placed or draped almost anywhere you can think of. Not only will these accents add some style to your room, but they’ll also make it feel more cozy as well.

Don’t forget about the bedroom

You spend at least 1/3 of your life in your bedroom, so it’s important for you to make that space as warm, welcoming, and comfortable as possible. Choosing some new bedding is a great way to add more style, texture, and plush coziness.

Keep it fresh and clean

One of the best ways to rejuvenate your space is by giving it a good cleaning. And if you’re spending more time indoors these days, keeping your home fresh and clean is important to your health, too. You should dust and vacuum regularly, and it’s also important to be diligent about replacing your A/C filters – you want the air you’re breathing to be clean, too! And speaking of the air, your home won’t really feel clean if it doesn’t also smell clean and fresh. Use cleaning products that are designed to actually neutralize odors, not just mask them. And once you’re finished cleaning, you can infuse some soothing smells into your environment by lighting one of our naturally-scented, hand-poured wax candles.

Enjoying Your Stay at Home

Let me also offer this advice as you work on transforming and rejuvenating your interior space. Don’t end up overwhelming yourself by trying to bite off more than you can chew. Make a list of all the things you’d like to change about your décor, and then start by picking one project to work on. See that project through to completion, then move on to the next one. If you’ll focus on just one item at a time, you’ll actually be able to see the fruit of your labors, and you’ll be more motivated to keep checking off the items on your home décor project list.
